York University

On July 24, 2020 the University announced that it had secured $275M in capital funding to allow construction to begin immediately. The funding comes from University reserves, borrowing and donations. The province has agreed to provide operating funding.

This development is a critical piece of plans for Markham Centre and for Markham more generally. A campus brings a range of economic and cultural benefits that are unique to university towns. The presence of the York campus will have a significant impact on how the Secondary Plan for Markham Centre and the Mobility Hub area will evolve. For example, the York team is in discussions with local developers regarding the potential for a privately-constructed student residence.
